The Beasts

The Beasts (Les Bêtes) is a French-Spanish drama thriller film directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and starring Denis Ménochet and Marina Foïs. The movie follows a French couple, Antoine and Olga, who move to a small village in Galicia, Spain, to live off the land and restore abandoned houses. However, their presence arouses hostility from some of the locals, particularly two brothers, Xan and Lorenzo, who are eager to sell their land to a wind energy company. The conflict between the French couple and the brothers escalates, with Antoine reporting the brothers' hostile behavior to the local authorities, who fail to take action. The tension reaches a boiling point when Antoine discovers that the brothers have sabotaged their farm, poisoning their tomato harvest with lead. In a fit of rage, Antoine trespasses onto the brothers' property and is confronted by Xan and Lorenzo, who threaten him with a shotgun. The situation further deteriorates when the remaining villager opposed to the wind farm development dies, leaving Antoine and Olga as the only remaining holdouts. In a desperate attempt to resolve the conflict, Antoine meets with the brothers in a local pub and explains that he will accept the majority opinion and leave the village if another vote is held. However, due to the sabotage of their harvest, they need to remain in the village for at least a year to recoup their losses. Tragically, Antoine is found dead a year later, and his disappearance remains unsolved. Olga continues to run the farm alone while searching for evidence of her husband's murder. The movie ends with Olga discovering an old camera that contains a recording of Antoine's confrontation with the brothers, but it is too late, and justice remains elusive for the grieving widow. The Beasts premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and received critical acclaim for its tense storytelling atmosphere and performances.
