What is An Officer and a Spy about? Toggle content

In 1894, French Captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongfully convicted of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. A year later, Officer Georges Picquart, Dreyfus' former teacher, was appointed head of the secret service section and discovers irregularities in the case against Dreyfus. Picquart is convinced of Dreyfus' innocence and tries to reopen the trial but meets opposition from his superiors. He is removed from office and arrested, but manages to tell his friend, the lawyer Louis Leblois, who organizes a committee for Dreyfus' rehabilitation. The committee involves intellectuals such as Émile Zola who publishes an article titled "J'accuse" that exposes irregularities in the trial. Zola is tried for defamation while Lieutenant Colonel Hubert Joseph Henry admits perjury before dying apparently by suicide. After Henry's confession, Picquart is released while Dreyfus undergoes a second trial in Rennes before Labori suffers an assassination attempt
