Alice Hyatt is a widowed single mother who dreams of being a professional singer in Monterey. After her husband's death, she and her preteen son Tommy set out on a journey across the country, taking temporary jobs along the way to make ends meet. Despite facing challenges and encountering difficult people, Alice remains determined to achieve her dream and create a better life for herself and Tommy. Along the way, she meets a cast of colorful characters, including a charming but abusive man named Ben, a kind-hearted rancher named David, and a group of waitresses at a diner in Tucson.
