A History of Violence follows the story of Tom Stall, a seemingly ordinary family man and diner owner who is forced to confront his dark past when he is accused of being a professional hitman. After Tom kills two robbers in self-defense, he is hailed as a hero and his life becomes consumed by unwanted attention. Carl Fogarty, a scarred gangster, recognizes Tom from his past and accuses him of being Joey Cusack, a Philadelphia hitman.
