A few actors—particularly Alison Pill as Zelda Fitzgerald and Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein—get under their famous characters’ skins, but Allen is mostly content to work in broad strokes in recreating one of Paris’ most-storied periods.

What is Midnight in Paris about? Toggle content

Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" is a romantic comedy that explores the illusion of a better life. The movie follows Gil Pender, a successful screenwriter struggling to finish his novel, as he travels back in time to 1920s Paris and becomes enamored with the artistic history of the city. He meets famous artists such as Hemingway and Picasso, who inspire him to reevaluate his life and relationships. Meanwhile, his fiancée Inez is unimpressed by Gil's obsession with the past and grows increasingly disillusioned with their relationship. As Gil navigates his love for Inez and his growing attraction to Adriana, a costume designer from the 1920s, he must confront the idea that happy endings might not always be what they seem. The film features an all-star cast including Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and Marion Cotillard.
