In a dystopian future, Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the totalitarian superstate of Oceania, begins an illicit love affair with Julia, a free-spirited young woman who works in the Ministry of Truth. As they secretly meet and enjoy a brief period of relative freedom and contentment, they are unaware that their every move is being monitored by the all-powerful Thought Police. When they are suddenly arrested and taken to the Ministry of Love for rehabilitation, Winston is subjected to brutal torture and psychological manipulation by O'Brien, a high-ranking member of the Inner Party.
