Dr. Joel Fleischman, a recent medical school graduate from New York, is sent to the small town of Cicely, Alaska to practice medicine as part of his scholarship contract. He soon discovers that the town is full of eccentric characters, including his boss, Maurice Minnifield, a wealthy businessman and former astronaut; Maggie O'Connell, a tomboyish bush pilot; Holling Vincoeur, a Canadian-born bar owner and mayor; Shelly Tambo, a former Miss Northwest Passage; Chris Stevens, a philosophical DJ; Ed Chigliak, a mild-mannered film buff; Ruth-Anne Miller, an elderly general store owner; Marilyn Whirlwind, Joel's calm and quiet receptionist; and many others.
