What is La Strada about? Toggle content

Set in the 1950s, La Strada follows the story of Gelsomina, a naive and simple-minded young woman who is sold by her impoverished mother to the brutish strongman Zampanò to be his assistant and wife. As they travel the Italian countryside performing together, Gelsomina finds a kindred spirit in Il Matto, a gentle-natured tightrope-walking clown, and contemplates leaving Zampanò. However, their relationship is complicated by Zampanò's volcanic temper and possessiveness, leading to tragic consequences. The film explores themes of servitude, love, and the struggle for independence, set against the backdrop of a traveling circus.
