His friend, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, joins the Imperial Russian Army as aide-de-camp of General Mikhail Kutuzov in the War of the Third Coalition against Napoleon.

The first part of Bondarchuk's masterpiece is overwhelming but kind-of-sort-of a mess. I think it probably helped me quite a bit to have read the novel. I really like the casting by the way.
