A Bridge Too Far

A Bridge Too Far tells the story of Operation Market Garden, a failed attempt by the Allies in World War II to end the war quickly by securing three bridges in Holland, allowing access over the Rhine into Germany. The operation involved 35,000 men being flown 300 miles from England and dropped behind enemy lines in the Netherlands. Two divisions of US paratroopers were responsible for securing the road and bridges as far as Nijmegen, while a British division, led by Major-General Roy Urquhart, was to land near Arnhem and hold both sides of the bridge, backed by a brigade of Polish paratroopers. However, the operation was doomed to failure due to poor intelligence, the presence of two crack German panzer divisions, and unfavorable weather conditions. The film features an all-star cast, including Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Michael Caine, and Sean Connery, and was directed by Richard Attenborough.
