1h 30min - Maud has been part of Sue’s downfall from the start. By marrying Rivers, Maud could escape the prison of her uncle’s house – where she was forced to assist him in cataloguing a collection of pornography. Maud hadn’t expected to be so emotionally involved by her relationship with Sue and is racked with guilt by what she has done. Rivers takes Maud to London to Mrs Sucksby’s house where it is revealed that through a series of twists, turns and financial promises Maud and Sue were switched at birth - they have been living each other’s lives. Mrs Sucksby, who has engineered the entire swindle, explains to Maud that she has no choice but to comply with the rest of the plan. Maud also learns that she is actually Mrs Sucksby’s daughter. Devastated by this and the discovery that they have no intention of rescuing Sue from the asylum, Maud tries to run away. Meanwhile, employing all the underhand tricks that her childhood has taught her, Sue makes good her escape from the asylum and the nurses who abuse her. She heads for London where she plans to get her revenge on Maud for what Sue sees as betrayal. At Mrs Sucksby’s, Sue confronts Maud, Mrs Sucksby and Rivers, a huge row ensues and in a struggle Rivers is killed. Despite Maud being guilty of Rivers’ murder, Mrs Sucksby confesses to protect both girls and soon after is executed for the crime. Maud disappears and Sue, realising that Maud was also a pawn in Mrs Sucksby’s scheme, sets off to find her. Acknowledging their feelings for one another, the two women are reunited.
